Tunisia & Libya
Departing 02-Mar-2011
to 22-Mar-2011
These two North African nations introduce us to over two thousand years of history: Carthaginian, Greek; Roman and Arab.
We start in Tunisia, the former empire of Carthage, which contains some of the best Roman sites in the Mediterranean world, like Dougga, El Djem, Bulla Regia and Sbeitla, as well as fascinating Arab soukhs and the glories of medieval mosques, particularly in Kairouan, the fourth holiest city in the Islamic world.
The archaeological sites of Libya are perhaps even more magnificent, particularly Sabratha and Leptis Magna in the West and Ptolemais and Cyrene (both originally Greek) in the East, while the journey across the country from Tripolitania to Cyrenaica takes us along the Mediterranean coast and the fringes of the desert.
In short this is a tour which should appeal to a wide variety of travellers; lovers of history, and all those interested in seeing and experiencing something different.
