Departing 16-Jan-2011
to 31-Jan-2011
For the adventurous traveller, China in winter is something to experience. For several months of the year, China turns on its magic, blanketing the countryside with snow and providing the locals and visitors alike with a spectacular display of frozen rivers and lakes. This trip will take you through the Forbidden City in Beijing and on to the Great Wall, then to the north-east to see the famous Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival. The Festival started in 1963 and is now one of the world's four largest ice and snow festivals.
The southern part of China also holds something special for the intrepid winter traveller and you will experience some of the fascinating ethnic minorities who live in the area as you travel beside the upper reaches of the Yangzi River and through the Old Towns of Dali and Lijiang. This is where camelias, azaleas and rhododendrons grow wild. Cruise along the Li River as the mist hides and then reveals the karst mountain peaks. The tour ends in Guangzhou, Canton, one of the great trade ports of China in the 19th Century. See how the city has continued in its role as one of the great engine-rooms of the Chinese economy. This is a unique tour which takes you from the frozen north of Manchuria to the tropical and sub-tropical south of Yunnan.
