Egypt: From Alexandria to Abu Simbel
Departing 07-Feb-2011
to 28-Feb-2011
This is one of the most comprehensive tours of Egypt that you will be able to find. It encompasses not only the great monuments of the ancient Egyptian world such as the Great Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx, the glories of Upper Egypt including the Temple of Karnak and the Valleys of the Kings and Queens with their many tombs and lesser known funerary temples, but it also includes visits to the city of Alexandria, founded by Alexander the Great, and brought to glory by the Ptolemies on the Mediterranean coast near the mouth of the Nile Delta, and the evocative Siwa Oasis where Alexander may have felt his first connection with the divine. The tour also introduces you to the colour and bustle of Islamic Cairo with its medieval mosques and maze-like Khan el-Khalili Bazaar.
The first week of the tour explores the Mediterranean coast with Alexandria, the World War II sites of El Alamein and Mersa Matrouh and the beautiful desert Oasis of Siwa. If you would prefer a shorter tour, we can offer the tour minus this Mediterranean section taking five days off the length of the tour. Your tour leader will accompany the main tour group, so during your first few days in Cairo you will be looked after by your local guide only. Accommodation is well located to allow you to do your own exploring.
