Burma: Land of Temples Plus an Optional Extension to Putao
Departing 25-Jan-2011
to 09-Feb-2011
Burma is a country rich in history, culture and spirituality. To some people it will be an ancient kingdom, to others a British Colony and then to the Burmese it is a land where fairies known as Nats can govern a persons life and fortune.
In this tour you will visit Yangon/Rangoon which is rich in Colonial architecture, Bagan which is a World Heritage site comprising over 4000 temples dating from the 10thC AD and Mandalay with its famous Maha Muni Temple where the Buddha has his teeth brushed every day. In Inle Lake with its famous leg rowers and floating gardens we'll visit the weekend market and see the pa-O and Padaung (long neck) people. After a fascinating trip upriver in a boat we arrive at Mrauk U where you will see pagodas completely different from those in Bagan and Mandalay and we'll also make a visit to the Chin tribe with their distinctive tattoos.
Handicrafts are very unique here, the famous Burmese lacquerware in Bagan, silk weaving in Mandalay and cotton and silk ikat weaving in Inle Lake. There are also puppets, pottery, parasols and tapestries encrusted with glass gems.
If you choose to extend the visit to Putao we will visit a pristine area below the Himalayas with unique wildlife and vegetation in an area which has only recently opened up to a limited number of tourists.
The Burmese people are very warm and welcoming and English is widely spoken being taught in schools from a young age.
