Autumn in Regional Japan
Departing 16-Oct-2010
to 02-Nov-2010
History flowed through Japan from south to north, much of it never getting past the fertile plains of Kinki (around Kyoto) and Kanto (around Tokyo). So to visit the far north, especially the northernmost island of Hokkaido, is to experience a less developed country that still retains large areas of low population and great scenic beauty. From here we wend our way south against the tide of history to end in Osaka.
Nowhere else does the past and present co-exist in such close proximity. Against a backdrop of spectacular Autumn colour, Autumn In Regional Japan examines this interaction and variety on and off the beaten track with a unique Japanese travel program combining wilderness with history; culture with religion.
After exploring the rugged, rustic northern island of Hokkaido, a train ride takes us beneath the Tsugaru Straits to the seldom-visited Tohoku region, Japan’s mysterious “Deep North” at the top of the main island of Honshu.
Staying at selected bases we gradually journey south, enjoying Tohoku’s natural and built environment en route. An extended stay in Tokyo is next, followed by a visit to the Central Highlands – the “Roof of Japan” – where we explore the rustic post towns of the Kiso Valley. We conclude our program in Osaka, in itself a full, not-to-be-missed cultural experience.
