Arabia Felix: Oman and Yemen
Departing 26-Oct-2010
to 20-Nov-2010
Arabia is an ancient land and indications of Neolithic occupation can be found throughout the entire Peninsular - however Yemen and Oman are diverse in many aspects. Oil rich Oman, although little developed before the present Sultan came into power, now boasts thriving cities, a buoyant economy, a farseeing conservation programme and sensitive preservation and restoration of historic forts and monuments. Yemen was almost unknown 35 years ago. It had no sealed roads, few schools and only two doctors for the entire country. The country has come a long way since then, but the ancient still pervades the modern; whereas the cities have modern hotels, hospitals, satellite dishes and all the amenities we have become use to, they are blended with the special character of old Yemen. Camels and ox drawn ploughs co-exist in villages that now have electricity, health care and schools, yet in many ways they are unchanged from their origins many centuries ago.
