Wagner’s Ring Cycle
This new production is by the visionary Chinese-American director Shi – Zheng Chen who directed Puccini`s Chinese opera- Turandot for Handa on Sydney Harbour 3 years ago.
In 2020 he will explore Wagner`s legendary tale through a futuristic lens with towering moving digital panels creating an immersive virtual world- and with extraordinary costumes and props imagining an unknown future.
French conductor Philippe Auguin – no stranger to the Ring Cycle – will direct the Queensland Symphony Orchestra with a cast of international and Australian-born singers, including Ukrainian-born Vitalij Kowaljow as Wotan/Wanderer; British soprano Allison Oakes as Brunnhilde; and German heldentenor Stefan Vinke reprising his role of Siegfried from the Melbourne Ring.
Local favourites include Warwick Fyfe as an outstanding Alberich- again from the Melbourne Ring; Rosario la Spina as Siegmund; Anna- Louise Cole as Sieglinde; Daniel Sumegi as Fasolt/Hagen; Luke Gabbedy as Gunther; Jacqueline Dark as Fricka; Liane Keegan as Erda, and Michael Honeyman as Donner.
On the production side, Shi-Zheng Chen as well as director will do the Production design, assisted by Fufan Zhang-with Leigh Sachwitz as Digital Content Designer; Anita Yavichj as Costume Designer and John Rayment as Lighting Designer.
The Tour package includes premium ticket for the third Cycle and there will be two full day visits out of Brisbane; one to the Sunshine Coast and hinterland, the other to the Gold Coast, Mount Tamborine and National Park. In addition, two half day visits to cultural and scenic attractions within Brisbane are planned. You will be staying at the Mantra Hotel, Southbank just a few minutes walk to the Queensland Performing Arts Centre where the Ring Cycle will be performed. It is also adjacent to parklands and river walks- and in close proximity to the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art and Queensland Art Gallery- as well as the State Library of Queensland and Queensland Museum.
Breakfast each day is included in the package, and meals will be provided during the longer intervals during the performances.
After the enormous success of the 2013 and 2016 Melbourne Ring Seasons there is sure to be tremendous interest in this major cultural event- the first Ring Cycle in Brisbane at the end of 2020.
YOUR TOUR LEADER: LEN AMADIO AO has had a distinguished career in music administration in the ABC and subsequently in senior arts positions in the South Australian Government. He has served on many National Boards and Committees including the Adelaide Festival, Opera Australia, Australian Youth Orchestra and the ABC. He has travelled extensively in Europe, North America and South East Asia, and led sixteen previous tours for Alumni Travel including twelve to Europe. In 2004 he led a highly successful tour to the Adelaide Ring Cycle, and has attended Ring Cycles at Bayreuth (1985;1989) in Seattle (1995) San Francisco (1999), the 1998 Adelaide Chatelet production, and the 2013 and 2016 Opera Australia Melbourne productions. In addition, Len has attended countless Wagner performances locally and internationally.
SATURDAY 28 NOVEMBER
Arrive into Brisbane early afternoon. Make your way to our hotel, Mantra on Southbank, for check in. The hotel is within easy walking distance of The Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC)) where the Ring Cycle will be performed.
Meet at 5pm for a light supper at the hotel, before walking to the Lyric Theatre for our first Ring Cycle performance, Das Reingold, which commences at 7pm. After the performance during which there is no break, make your way back to the hotel. (Light Supper)
SUNDAY 29 NOVEMBER
This morning we walk to the Southbank wharf to pick up the Citycat service, and cruise upriver to the University of Queensland campus at St Lucia. We take a stroll through the campus to points of interest and then pick up our coach for the drive to Mt Coot-Tha, where we can take in the spectacular view before having a leisurely lunch at the Summit Restaurant.
Board the coach again for the drive back to the city and hotel. You can be dropped in town if you want to explore further. Find your own dinner tonight. (B,L)
MONDAY 30 NOVEMBER
After Breakfast today, our coach will pick us up at 9am from the hotel for a full day excursion to the Gold Coast and its hinterland.
Offering lush subtropical bushland, spectacular views back to the coast and interesting settlements, we will be visiting Mount Tambourine as part of the journey. We will have lunch at St Bernard’s Hotel, one of the best locations in the area, before returning to our hotel in Brisbane. (B,L)
TUESDAY 01 DECEMBER
Breakfast. This morning at 9.30am we take a stroll around the immediate environs of our hotel. We are in the Brisbane arts precinct and one of its more recent editions is the Gallery of Modern Art Brisbane (GOMA), opened in December 2006 as a partner institution with the Queensland Art Gallery, just 150 ms away. The State Library is close by too. At 10am we will be given an orientation talk and tour of GOMA, and then you will have free time to explore by yourself or head to the Art Gallery to take in its offerings. Make your own way back to the hotel.
Tonight, we will meet in the Lyric Theatre to experience the second of our Ring Cycle performances, Die Walkure, which will commence at 5pm. Dinner and drinks will be served during the longer break in the performance, and dessert will follow in the shorter intermission. After the performance, walk back to the hotel. (B,D)
WEDNESDAY 02 DECEMBER
Breakfast. This morning we take the ferry again, this time heading past the Botanical Gardens, the CBD and under the Storey Bridge, getting off at Teneriffe. Our coach meets us and we drive to New Farm where we will be having a guided tour of the Powerhouse Arts Centre. The Arts Centre is housed in a former powerhouse in the suburb of New Farm and now offers space for an array of performing arts, visual arts, festivals and free community events.
The first stages of the Powerhouse were built in 1927-28 to provide power for Brisbane’s trams. Decommissioned in 197i, it was reimagined and then opened in its present form in 2000. After our tour, the coach will take us back to the hotel in time for lunch (own expense), via the CBD, if anyone wants to explore further. (B)
THURSDAY 03 DECEMBER
Today is free for your own exploration. Your tour Leader will have some suggestions, but there is plenty to see and do without leaving the South Bank precinct.
We will meet again at the Lyric Theatre for your performance of Siegfried commencing at 5.00pm. We enjoy dinner with drinks during the first interval of the performance tonight, with a dessert box for the second interval. (B,D)
FRIDAY 04 DECEMBER
After Breakfast today, our coach will pick us up at 9am from the hotel for a full day excursion up into the Brisbane and Sunshine Coast hinterland and then along the coast back from Maroochydore to the city. We will have stops at Maleny and Montville to take in the charm of the delightful mountain scenery, and photogenic villages. We arrive at Highwood House, with its hill-top views of mountains and coastline, where we will have lunch. Boarding our coach again we head for the Sunshine Coast, working our way back via Caloundra to the city via Redcliffe and to our South Bank hotel. Dinner at own expense. (B,L)
SATURDAY 05 DECEMBER
Today is free for your own exploration of Brisbane, before our final performance. Gotterdammerung which will commence at4pm and a special farewell dinner and drinks will be served during the first interval of the performance. You will have a special dessert box for the final interval. This will be the last night of the tour. (B,D)
SUNDAY 06 DECEMBER
Check out of your accommodation. We will have a look at the various flights that group members are taking home, and match you up to share maxi-taxis to the airport, if desired, or you can continue with your own arrangements. (B)

I’m Interested…How Do I Book?
Fill in the online Booking Form, read and agree with our Terms & Conditions, select your payment option for your deposit of $2,750.00 per person to Alumni Travel and Submit. (This represents your performance ticket plus a tour deposit). Upon receipt of your Booking Form and deposit, you will receive a confirmation of your place in writing. Seats will be allocated on a first come first served basis.
DEPOSIT AND FINAL PAYMENT:
The deposit is accepted as a first instalment of the tour cost and will be fully refunded if the arrangements cannot be confirmed or the tour is cancelled by Alumni Travel. Final payment for the tour needs to be received at least 60 days prior to tour departure. No refund can be guaranteed on the performance ticket, as this is paid in full at the beginning of 2020.
CANCELLATION AND REFUNDS:
Any cancellation from the tour needs to be done in writing. The cancellation date will be taken from the day your written cancellation is received by Alumni Travel. Should you decide to cancel your booking up to 60 days prior to departure, your deposit is fully refunded less an administration fee of $100, per person. No refund can be guaranteed on the performance ticket. The following cancellation charges apply, per person:
Over 60 days $100.00 – Administration Fee
59 – 40 days 25% of tour cost
39 – 10 days 50% of tour cost
Within 10 days 100% of tour cost
If a difference occurs between these cancellation conditions and those imposed by our suppliers, then the conditions of the supplier shall apply.
There is no refund before or after travel has commenced or for any unused portion of the tour, either in regard to the standard group arrangements or separate independent arrangements.
CREDIT CARD PAYMENTS:
Any payments by credit card will be subject to a 2% non-refundable Merchant Administration Fees.
It is now standard policy with our company that all our international travellers have some type of international travel insurance, so that you are covered for any unforeseen circumstances that may arise. A comprehensive Insurance brochure is available from Alumni Travel. The insurance brochure contains the terms and conditions under which insurance cover will be offered to you.
ADDITIONAL TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS:
If you would like Alumni Travel to assist you with any additional arrangements pre or post tour, please contact our office for assistance at time of booking. All arrangements need to be finalised at least 30 days prior to your departure.
An administration fee of $30.00 per amendment will be charged for any changes made to any reservation within 30 days prior to your departure. Any additional charges imposed by our suppliers will also be payable.
PASSPORT AND VISAS:
It is the traveller’s responsibility to ensure that they possess the necessary travel documentation for the tour, such as a valid passport and any required visas. Your passport should be valid at least 6 months beyond the end of your journey and have two clear pages for each country to be visited in your journey.
In the event that passenger numbers do not reach the minimum number of tour participants (35, excluding the tour leader) required for the tour, it may be necessary to either surcharge or cancel the tour. If such an event does occur, you will be notified at least 60 days prior to the tour departure.
Tour prices have been calculated on the basis of exchange rates and tariffs at time of print and are subject to change up until final payment has been received. Once final payment is received, no surcharges will apply. Should you decide to cancel your arrangements on the basis of a change in the tour price, normal cancellation charges will apply.
