TURKEY: THE LURE OF THE EAST

WITH ROB LOVELL

16 MAY - 04 JUNE 2009

From the vibrant green of Turkey's lush Black Sea Coast, through dense pine forests and hidden valleys, this tour encompasses some of the most dramatic scenary in the world. The extraordinary diversity of Turkey's Eastern and South-Eastern region includes the red ochre plains of Erzurum, the forests, waterfalls and green pastures of Kars and the permanent snow-cap on Biblical Mount Agri (Ararat). Lake Van with its deep blue waters, small earth-roofed houses, and fascinating tribes of nomadic people intrigue the inveterate and lover of beauty and adventure.

This region encompasses the area known as Mesopotamia and despite its long and trubulent journey, the remains of many civilisations await our discovery on this fabulous journey. We shall travel along the ancient routes of the Silk Road as well as traversing the area between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. Visits to the Mosaic Museum in Antioch (Antakya), the bee-hive houses of Harran, the great Ataturk Dam, and the incredible man-made mountain at Nemrut Dag are also included.

The scope of Turkey is far too broad to cover in a single visit. Many people return and this tour is especially recommended to travellers who have already experienced Western Turkey on our regular Crossroads of Civilisation tour.

Your Tour Leader: Rob Lovell studied at the University of Durham (MA) and at the University of Sydney (BA, Dip Ed, MEd Hons) and taught English and History in secondary schools and TAFE colleges in NSW before lecturing in Education at the University of Sydney. In 1989 he established Alumni Travel, one of the few travel companies in Australia dedicated to special interest, educational and cultural tourism. This has enabled him to indulge in three ongoing passions: the pursuit of life long learning, international exchange and of course travel. While Rob has confined his tour leading until recently, to Viet Nam and Cambodia, he has travelled widely including to Turkey, although only to the western part. He is keen to see for the first time, many of the archaeological sites he studied as a university student.
