TUNISIA & LIBYA

 WITH LEONIE HAYNE

04 - 24 MARCH 2009

These two North African nations introduce us to over two thousand years of history: Carthaginian; Greek; Roman and Arab.

We start in Tunisia, the former empire of Carthage, which contains some of the best Roman sites in the Mediterranean world, like Dougga, El Djem, Bulla Regia and Sbeitla, as well as the fascinating Arab soukhs and the glories of medieval mosques, particularly in Kairouan, the fourth holiest city in the Islamic world.

The archaeological sites of Libya are perhaps even more magnificent, particularly Sabratha and Leptis Magna in the West and Ptolemais and Cyrene (both originally Greek) in the East, while the journey across the country from Tripoliania to Cyrenacia takes us along the Mediterranean coast and along the fringes of the desert.

In short this is a tour which should appeal to a wide variety of travelers; lovers of history, and all those interested in seeing and experiencing something different.

Your Tour Leader: Leonie Hayne, has tutored and lectured at Sydney University for over twenty years, at pass and Honours levels and for undergraduate and post-graduate courses. Retired in 1996, she now lectures to a number of USA groups. She has travelled extensively over Europe, where she has visited Roman sites in many countries.
