The Treasure House:St Petersburg and BeyondWith Dr Maria Lobytsyna23 June - 05 July 2009Plus an Optional Extension to Helsinki, Tallinn and CopenhagenRussia has much to offer us. The Russians know the darker side of history but they also understand the extraordinary power of art, music and literature and have produced a culture of extraordinary richness and variety. We will visit St Petersburg and the ancient town of Novgorod, explore the countryside and learn about the wild culture of the Russian North, and enjoy the exotic beauty of the island of Kizhi, the unique "treasure house" of ancient Russian culture to discover these manifestations of beauty, permeated by the spiritual qualities of the Russian people. June-July is a special time to travel to Russia. We will enjoy the world-famous "Stars of the White Nights" festival that takes place every year at the Mariinsky Theatre and follow the steps of the characters of the "Russian Arch" in the Hermitage Museum. Following the footsteps of the great architects, artists, writers and musicians, we will visit churches, monasteries, Imperial palaces and museums. There will be opportunities to attend various concerts and opera performances throughout the tour, at venues including the Mariinsky Theatre, the Hermitage Theatre and the Conservatory in St Petersburg. There will also being a chance to attend a performance of folk dancing at the Konstantinovskii Palace. Our experience of Russian church service and of the beauty of spiritual art and music will help to "open the door" of the "Russian treasure house". Our optional extension includes a few days in Helsinki, Tallinn and Copenhagen; revealing their Russian connection before we depart from Copenhagen back to Australia.
