SUMMER FESTIVALS IN AUSTRIA

With Len Amadio

25 July-13 August 2009

Summer in Europe is Festival Time, especially for music and opera performances, and no more so then in Austria, that small but vibrant Republic in the centre of Europe with its historic capital city Vienna. It is Vienna described as "contemporary vibrancy amidst imperial grandeur", which is centerpiece for our 2009 European Music Tour. We settle into that city for ten days and nights in comfortabl serviced apartments allowing ample time for leisurely sightseeing and on several afternoons and evenings we attend music and opera performances outside the city, returning to Vienna later in the evening. These will include opera at St Margarethen and at Klosterneuberg, and concerts at Esterhazy Castle and Deutschordenhaus. In addition we will tour the Vienna Woods visiting Heiligenkreuz and Baden, visit the baroque gardens at Schloss Hof, travel on the Danube to Bratislava, capital of Slovakia, for a city tour, wine tasting and lunch, cross the border into Hungary to Sopron and Fertod to visit the baroque Esterhazy Castle and into the Czech Republic border town of Mikulov and two castles- Lednice and Valtice.

Before arriving in Vienna we spend three nights in Tyrol, in the Kufstein/Erl area, where we will see a performance of a Wagner opera in the modern Erl opera house in its lovely rural setting; visit the beautiful Tyrolean capital city of Innsbruck and also stop at Linz, European cultural city of 2009.

On our way out of Vienna we travel to Bad Ischl for three nights in the Salzburg Lake district for an operetta at the Lehar festival; and a matinee concert at nearby Salzburg Festival. Finally we travel west across Tyrol to Bergenz on Lake Constance for three nights. Here we will see an opera performance on the spectacular lake stage at the annual Bregenz Festival.

The optional extra for this tour is a 4 night stay in Lucerne and the opportunity to attend two concerts at the world renowned Lucerne International Music Festival. This charming Swiss city is lapped by a scenic lake, surrounded by mountains, and is a veritable college of medieval bridges, old squares and watery vistas.
