SPECIAL ADVANCE NOTICE FOR 2010

OBERAMMERGAU PASSIONPLAY

The history of the Oberammergau Passion Play dates back to 1633. Following the Thirty Years War when many suffered not only war, but also the plague, the population of Oberammergau vowed to perform "the play of the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ" on a 10 year basis. This event which began in Whitsun in 1634 has attracted spectators since the middle of the 18th century. In 2010 Alumni Travel will offer you the opportunity to experience this world-famous play in its 41st production.

Over 2000 participants will bring the story of Jesus of Nazareth to the eyes and ears of the audience in a five-hour presentation on the imposing open-air stage.

The new production under the direction of Christian Stuckl and the artistic team of the Passion Play in 2000, including stage designer Stefan Hageneier and music directors Markus Zwink and Michael Bocklet, reflects the tremendous community achievement of the Oberammergau village in the play's creation. For ten months villagers playing the roles of Jesus, Mary, Pontius Pilate and the apostles, of the children, soldiers and priests, will be rehearsing a newly revised text whilst the orchestra and the singers will be studying the exceptional music created for the performance by composer Rochus Dedler.

In 2010 for the first time the performance will begin in the afternoon with the second part being completed in the evening. The play first premieres on Saturday 15 May 2010 and then it will be staged for a total of 102 days.
