Vietnam extends 1,600km along the western rim of the South China Sea. While 16% is under cultivation, the remaining areas are either mountainous or forested. 80% of Vietnam's population of 82.6 million are ethnic Vietnamese, with a total of 53 ethnic minority groups including the Tay and Hmong in the north and west, the Cham in the Centre and Chinese and Khmer in the south. Buddhism is the dominant religion.
