HIGHLIGHTS OF VIETNAM

From Hanoi To Ho Chi Minh City

25 March - 10 April 2009

Discover Vietnam's rich cultural heritage on this 16 day tour that visits World Heritage Sites, museums, peaceful pagodas, grand royal tombs, temples of the remarkable but little known Cham Kingdom, and places of great natural beauty including Halong Bay and the Mekong Delta. We begin our journey in Hanoi, a city of charming French architecture, at the venerable Metropole Hotel. In the muted corridors, period furnishings and bamboo and wood walls still exude the colonial ambience that once hosted Somerset Maugham, Noel Coward, Charlie Chaplin. This was where Graham Greene wrote part of The Quiet American.

In the introduction he wrote "...in Indo-China I drained a magic potion, a loving cup...  The spell was first cast, I think, by the tall elegant girls in white silk trousers, by the pewter evening light on flat paddy fields, where the water-buffaloes trudged fetlock-deep with a slow primeval gait, the French perfumeries in the rue Catinat, the Chinese gambling houses in Cholon, above all that feeling of exhilaration...."

Vietnam extends 1,600km along the western rim of the South China Sea. While 16% is under cultivation, the remaining areas are either mountainous or forested. 80% of Vietnam's population of 82.6 million are ethnic Vietnamese, with a total of 53 ethnic minority groups including the Tay and Hmong in the north and west, the Cham in the Centre and Chinese and Khmer in the south. Buddhism is the dominant religion. High economic growth achieved by liberalization measures and a transition to a market based economy now afford the traveller a high level of comfort with world class hotels, fine dining and the preservation of heritage sites. This tour has been especially tailored to focus on the history, environment and culture of Vietnam. Join us on what promises to be a truly memorable journey.
