Korea

With Simon Gentry

23 September - 10 October 2009

Over the centuries this ruggedly beautiful peninsula, suspended from China into the East Sea, has been the conduit for culture, religion and technology from China into Japan. In this process it absorbed and modified these ideas so that now Korea has many Chinese attributes, but with a definite Korean overlay.

Lying near the Japanese plate, Korea has been moulded, folded and leached into mountains, crags, valleys, streams and waterfalls. A mountain runs along the East coast, while the south and west present a coastline of inlets, islets and fjords. These provide unsurpassed scenery and hiking opportunities.

History has not been kind to Korea: at times internally divided, it has been successively ravaged by Mongols, Manchus and Japanese. This has produced a wealth of historic sites and a people of character and resiliance, as we will see.

Historic, scenic and cultured, Korea has much to offer. We hope you will join us in this exploration.
