Our visit is to the heart of this Chinese World: the two major capitals, Chang'an (Xi'an) and Beijing; Lijiang, at the foothills of the Tibetan range and home to the Naaxi people; Shanghai, the booming business centre; and old China's main transport arteries- the Grand Canal and Yangzi River. Marco Polo, one of China's first visitors in the thirteenth century, was greatly impressed with China. Not only was the country beautiful and the palaces sumptous and grand but the living was different and exotic to the visitor. The description of his travels stimulated Europe's fascination with the Middle Kingdom, a fascination that continues today.
